There are many different products now available for those with mobility problems and even the elderly that have weak body strength so simple tasks that they might find difficult to do such as pouring a kettle easier for them. Here are some examples of products available and how they can help;
-
Bottle and jar openers – These can aid those with weak upper body strength or with limited movement in their arms and hands. There are different variations on the products there are some that are a rubber cone cap that is put over the top of the lid of the bottle or jar and when the person twists the lid with the cone on the rubber grips the lid and makes it easier to turn. Or there are ones that have a metal lop with a rubber rim and you tighten the loop around the lid and it has a lever on the edge you can turn instead of having to twist the lid or cap.
- Kettle tipper – This is for those with problems similar as above (weak or limited upper body movement) and it is very effective as it takes all the weight of the kettle and means they don’t have to lift the kettle at all. It is basically a cradle for the kettle to sit in and it has a pendulum movement as they lift the kettle. So once the kettle is boiled they just have to lift the kettle lightly and the cradle will take all the weight for them so those that usually struggle with making hot drinks can now do it a lot easier.
-
Perching stool – This is a widely use piece of equipment especially with the elderly that can’t stand for long periods of time. It is mainly used in the kitchen when they are preparing food and cooking for long periods of time, they are also very versatile and can be used for different purposes around the house ironing for example.
- Cutting boards – There are specialised cutting boards that can be used to make the lives of those with limited mobility easier when preparing food. They have a non slip base and some even have different sections that are shaped for cutting fruit and vegetables, there are some that even have a section for a piece of bread for those that can only use one arm properly.
- Cutlery – There are some companies that produce cutlery and other utensils with enlarged handles to make it easier for those that don’t have a very good grip or don’t have much control over there muscles to eat on their own.
